چکیده

In the present article the relation between the energy transfer rate from the primary to the secondary and the evolutionary degree of W UMa-type binaries is given and the energy transfer rates and the evolution degrees of three W UMa-type contact binaries (TV Mus, SS Ari and RZ Com) are calculated. The analyzed results show that the maximum value of the energy transfer rate is basically determined by the mass ratio. The greater the mass ratio, the greater the maximum possible value of the energy transfer rate. The energy transfer rate is related to the evolutionary degree of the primary, and the greater the evolutionary degree of the primary, the smaller the energy transfer rate. The energy transfer from the primary to the secondary could stop when the evolutionary degree of the primary reaches a specific value which is determined by a property of the system.

Structure and evolution of low mass W UMa type systems

The structure and evolution of low-mass W UMa type contact binaries are discussed by employing Eggleton’s stellar evolution code (Eggleton 1971, 1972, 1973). Assuming that these systems completely satisfy Roche geometry, for contact binaries with every kind of mass ratios (0.02∼1.0), we calculate the relative radii (R1,2/A, where R1,2 are the radii of both stars, and A the orbital separation) o...

Angular momentum and mass evolution of contact binaries

Various scenarios of contact binary evolution have been proposed in the past, giving hints of (sometimes contradictory) evolutionary sequence connecting A-type and W-type systems. As the components of close detached binaries approach each other and contact binaries are formed, following evolutionary paths transform them into systems of two categories: A-type and W-type. The systems evolve in a ...

The old model of an unevolved, cool contact binary, in which the secondary component is strongly oversized due to energy transfer from the primary, and the whole system is out of thermal equilibrium, encounters serious problems. I present a new scenario for evolution of contact binaries, which solves the problem of thermal nonequilibrium by assuming that contact binaries are past mass exchange ...

Contact Binaries

Despite being the most abundant (by space density) of interacting binary stars, W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) stars are not understood structurally. Their stellar components are in physical contact, and share a common convective envelope. Observations demand large-scale energy exchange between components, as do considerations of hydrostatic and thermal equilibrium. Yet solutions in complete equilibri...

Evolutionary status of late-type contact binaries

An abstract should be given A new scenario for evolution of contact binaries is presented and discussed. Arguments are given that W UMa-type systems are formed from detached binaries which lose angular momentum via magnetized wind. This takes typically several Gyr. Such an age is sufficient for the initially more massive component to deplete hydrogen in its core and to fill the Roche lobe. As a...
